wow, gee, I’m happy for you, i think…but i’m not sure…cuz i don’t think i get it anyway….so…huzzah?
There’s a fundamental problem with relative-date stuff that is done server-side – the client might be in a different time zone. So, unless your date says “Yesterday – if you’re on EDT” or something like that, it can be quite cofusing – people could see “Today” on something that was published nearly 23 hours ago, but “Yesterday” on something that was published just 30 minutes ago – depending on when you published that post. So – indicating what time zone you are in (relative to GMT) might be something you’d want to do on your “About” page? (I know you mention what city, but some people might be a little confused as to what time zone that is. I’m not, because I know someone in Springfield MO, but anyway… you get my point, I think.)
Well, using Javascript I could get the client’s time, and then do the calculation based on that data. However, I dislike client side scripting on principle. Also because I’m much more php savvy than I am javascript savvy.
However, ultimately you are correct, my system lacks because it is relative to ME, not to anyone else. Just for reference however, I’m GMT -5:00, Central Daylight Time.
In a week I’ll be GMT -6:00, Central Standard Time.
In the end, this is mostly a benefit to myself, however, I’ll need to consider the effects this has on my international friends… Maybe javascript is the answer… Never thought I’d say it though.

If this is mainly a benefit to yourself, then perhaps you want to use the same technique that you used to hide the “edit this post” link from others to select that just you should see this relative date and others should see the absolute date?
Another alternative is to try to use GeoIP to use the IP address that they’re coming from and from that determine what country they’re in – and this should help determine the appropriate time zone for a great number of them – and for the rest, you can prompt them and then store their GMT offset in a cookie….
There are solutions that do not involve JavaScript – but sometimes the client-side way is the easiest way.
It might also help, if, in small print, near the top or bottom of the page, you include the date/time the page was loaded as the server understands it. Then let them do the calculations to figure out what time it actually was posted relative to to them….
