Scooter Maintenance Articles

I will be posting a slew of scooter maintenance articles over the next several days, and this post will serve as a directory for those posts, and something to link to.

The articles deal with maintenance and performance upgrades for the Aprilia SR50 DiTech and the Aprilia Mojito (Habana in Europe). They are both 50cc scooters, but the Mojito is air-cooled and has a carburetor, and the DiTech is liquid-cooled and has fuel injection. Both scooters are built on the Morini platform. However, even if you have a different scooter, it is likely that you will get some benefit from these articles. Many scooters are built on the Morini platform, and even scooters built on other platforms will have similar parts and arrangements. Modern scooter makes such as Vespa, Malaguti, Piaggio, Honda, Yamaha, Italjet, MBK and Benelli all have similar innards, and you can learn much from these articles.

These articles were all written by Scott (AKA “Scootnfast”:http://www.apriliaforum.com/forums/member.php?s=&action=getinfo&userid=1418 on the “ApriliaForum”:http://www.apriliaforum.com boards) as forum posts. I have (with Scott’s permission) taken the information and photos he posted, edited them for clarity and formatting, and posted them here, in order to preserve them and make them more accessible to non-forum goers.

* “CVT Basics”:http://www.flexistentialist.org/archives/2003/10/27/cvt_basics_const.shtml – Describes the basic operation of the CVT (Constant Variable Transmission) that is the automatic transmission for most modern scooters. It is a simple device, but it can be difficult to understand how the different parts, roller weights, variator pulleys, and contra springs all work together to provide you with twist-n-go ease. Any scooter driver should understand at least a bit about what is going on down there.
* “De-restricting an Aprilia Scooter, or Most Any Modern Scooter”:http://www.flexistentialist.org/archives/2003/10/28/derestricting_an.shtml – Most modern scooters come to you in a restricted state. They aren’t producing all the power they can be. This is usually done for legal reasons dealing with importing and registering of scooters, but the restrictions are easily undone, to give your scooter back its performance. The directions described are for an Aprilia Mojito and SR50 Ditech, but the techniques are applicable to nearly all modern scooters.
* Installing a Big Bore Kit on an Air-Cooled Mojito – This article describes the installation of a 70cc kit on an Aprilia Mojito, which is an air-cooled scooter based on the Morini engine. Techniques here will be applicable to nearly all air-cooled two-stroke engines.
* Installing a Big Bore Kit on a Liquid-Cooled SR50 DiTech – This article describes the installation of a 70cc kit on an Aprilia SR50 DiTech, a fuel injected, liquid-cooled version of the Morini engine. Techniques here can be used for other DiTech scooters (such as the Scarabeo DiTech), and other liquid-cooled engines.
* Installing New Final Drive Gears on an SR50 DiTech – This article describes the installation of new final drive gears on a DiTech. These instructions should help with the installation of gears on any Morini based scooter, and will give you an idea of what is involved in any final drive installation.

    I have an MBK BOOSTER NEXT GENERATION 50cc 2 stroke scooter.
    I would like sevice information please.
    -What spark plug and gap must I use?
    -How do i clean the air filter?
    -Must I change the oil?
    -If so how much oil do I put in or
    is there a level to fill it to?
    -What oil must I use?
    -How do I drain the old oil?
    -Is there anything else I need to do
    in order to service it?

    my piaggio nrg mc3(02) will not start so i took it to a garage an they told me there was no spark but did’nt tell me what i should do about it so any solutions

    if there is no spark its either the coil or cdi unit coils are bout £50 probs cheaper n cdi varys it round bout £100 may be bit more

    i have a piaggio zip 50 and am having problems with the drive. Scenario: Riding along at whatever speed and slow down (quickly or slowly) to a stop at traffic lights (for example). When pulling away the engine doesn’t rev and i have very little or no drive. This lasts for 3-5 seconds and then the engine sound changes and the scooter drives away as normal. When it gets going all is fine until i stop again and try to pull away. Uphill is worse than flat. Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening?

    how can i make my aprilla sr 50 go faster i have brought a full derstrited exuastst racing pipe as well and still only doing 50 with a lot of dead spots can any one help!!!

    my zip does that the key is not to full trhottle but half throtle then progres til u find the biggest power been used if u no wat i mean then just hold it there :)

    my sr 50 di-tech has a leo vinve zx pipe and nothin else and itdes 43 mph wat speed will it do with gameboy mod washer taken out rollers and performance clutch thanks! p.s brilliant site love the detailed diagrams and good advice love it!

    i have a rs 50 ditech and the batery went flat i used a jump pack and blew somthing ther is no spark ani ideas what it could be ??? i have alrady changed the fuses ???

    Hi ! Thanks for your great tutorials on the Mojito Aprilia.

    I have a question, though : I need to change the oil transmission. I have seen many tutorials that show two screws to undo (one to allow the oil to go out and one to fill the transmission with oil) : I have watched my Mojito but I can’t find anything that look like those two screws to change the transmission’s oil. Do you have any clue about where those screws are ?

    were are the restrictions on a derbi extream 50cc 06 plate, it has a hebo race exhaust on it (65mph) but still not as fast a it can go i need to de-restrict it before it blows up.

    i need help with my moped piaggio 50cc every time i go out on it it only goes 27 mph and it is very slow on set of its realy stating to anoy me. no matter what i do to make it faster it wontgo faster. is it a comman foult or is it realy that slow.

    i have a piaggio nrg mc3 it will not start again after i started it only this morning. it drank the last bit of the petrol but the carbs clean? sp thats not the fault, theres electric going to the spark and everything else works? its really doing my head in! do i put it in a garage to fix it? will they make me pay more than the peice of the s**ts worth..?
