Buy Nothing Day
Today is “Buy Nothing Day”:http://adbusters.org/campaigns/bnd/ the day when many people decide that holidays aren’t about buying as much stuff as you possibly can. The day after Thanksgiving, typically known as “Black Friday”, is the biggest shopping day of the year. Everybody ‘knows’ that today is the day to shop.
Why not take a break from the consumptive lifestyle that we all live in? Take one day, and don’t buy anything.

Hi Sam,
I support “Buy Nothing Day” and agree wholeheartedly that our rampant consumerism is one of the root causes of our national malise. We could all learn more about having less.
However, in the spirit of clarity, it is worth mentioning that the biggest shopping day for Christmas is always the last Saturday before Christmas (regardless of year). Having been a retailer for many years I can add that the second or third biggest day we had was the day *after* Christmas (go figure!).
Anyway, today I’m going to buy lunch at the El Burrito, hope that doesn’t violate the spirit!
Yours for “living within your means”,
Rodney
Yup, that saturday would certainly be a busy day! I admit I haven’t seen any statistics about it, but I was under the impression that “Black Friday” was the biggest day of the year for shopping.
But regardless of whether it is the biggest or the second biggest, it is certainly huge!
And I don’t think buying lunch at a family owned restraunt that you’ve been patronizing for more than 20 years is a sign of rampant consumerism, and it certainly isn’t a violation of the ‘spirit’ of Buy Nothing Day. In fact, I could probably go for a relleno right about now, if I were anywhere near El Burrito.
We did it! We didn’t shop at all today – in fact, my husband and I stayed in and ate leftover chinese food while watching feel good movies all day. We spent no money and had a great time together.
